Carmel Swim Club Winter Invitational January 17-19, 2003
We're heading back down to the Nat for our first hosted prelims/finals meet! The top 16 swimmers in each event in every age group will return each night to swim in the finals sessions. Last year this meet drew some great competition, and some very fast swims. We wish everyone good luck and lots of fun. We are the host to many out of town, out of state teams, so let's try to show them our best Carmel smiles & hospitality (even if they are not being the best they can be to you!). If you did not receive a volunteer shirt at the November meet, they will be available at the meet t-shirt table.

The next Popcorn and movie night will be on Saturday, January 26th at Greyhound Station. The movie will be "Ice Age" , rated G. Feel free to bring board games or puzzles.
The movie will begin at 7pm. Anticipated conclusion: 8:30-9:00pm.
Since you won’t be coming directly from practice, you may want to eat dinner first. (Popcorn does not make a meal!) Every swimmer may bring one guest. There is no charge. Remember to bring your own blankets or pillows to watch the movie in comfort.
After a recent meet, I decided to write this, not only for swimmers, but for their parents as well. Four years ago, a young girl, ten and a half years old, decided that more than anything she wanted to be on the Carmel Swim Club. She tried out and was put in the Hammerhead Blue group. Well, of course, she was a little upset because her friends were already Tiger Sharks. However, she worked very hard and went to every practice she could. She practiced four days a week, the most allowed for a Hammerhead.
She went to most of the meets only to find she was pretty much at the bottom of the list. She continued to practice hard and moved up to the Tiger Sharks. Although she knew she wouldn’t be getting a State T-shirt like most of her friends, she went to the State party and had a great time. She even went to the State meet to cheer on her teammates. Again, she persevered, and throughout the summer she practiced twice a day when it was required. Never once did her parents have to push her to go to practice, nor did they discourage her because her times were not good enough. Finally, she moved up to the Barracudas and made it to Semi-State. She continued to work really, really hard but still no State cut. Finally, her time came. She moved up to Stingrays.
The practices were quite grueling. At this time, a new coach arrived on the scene.
He was extremely supportive and she became more confident in her technique as well as her endurance. The meet I mentioned above was a real turning point. After four years
of COURAGE & PERSEVERANCE (having just turned 14) she made it into the Finals. She not only dropped over three seconds in Finals, but she got her first State cut in the 200 Butterfly! I am writing this because as swim parents (myself included) we often get carried away with times and winning and we forget that our kids are out there working as hard as they can, with all their heart.
If their times aren’t what they had hoped for, we still need to be supportive and show them that they, too can succeed!
